Certain Little Thing (Demo)

  • Although my feet are planted on the Earth, I am blessed as surely as I am cursed to be forever wand'ring through the mire and haze that becloud my imagination. I'm brand new.

Track Name: Farmer's Son's Greatest Sigh
He was born to the field, he was born beneath the apricot tree
With blistered little fingers, tub half empty
His unapologetically red mouthed mother continued to bake his daddy's bread
His three arrow-slingin, shootin older brothers nearly always knelt and prayed before bed
Farmer's smooth-faced son stood a'shoutin, waist-deep in the golden bearded wheat
Asking a God who hid behind purple clouds to stand him up on two farmer's feet

But your feet don't belong to a farmer, your feet are not your own
If there's one thing you learned from your Daddy this summer, you reap the crop that you've sown
While you're out running, tell me, did you ever see me coming?
Standing out to scare the crows,
Why is heaven silent? Only heaven knows.

She smoked her first cigarette, his glass-eyed dolly
Unapologetically red-lipped
Tasted something like independence day with her ring on her finger on her hip
He said, "run, my little angel!
Run, my baby doll"
He said, "run, my little baby
Or at least little darling, try to crawl"

He said, "Run!"

He's a runaway, a fugitive, he's gone beneath her stare
He's run so far inside himself only God can find him there
And while you're out running, tell me did you ever see Him coming?
Standing out to scare the crows, why is heaven silent? only heaven knows.
Track Name: Blonde-Haired Boy
Moon was broken the night he stepped into my car
No words spoken, alright, just this borrowed guitar
He never comes when I call, just when it'll scare me
Blinks those green eyes so unfairly
Blonde-haired boy

I watch the street and he hums, he does the same
Smile in the dark while I strum, choose a new name
I sit all alone, he'll sneak up softly
Sometimes I'm on my own to drink my coffee
Blonde-haired boy

Hold him before he goes
Don't know if I'll see him again
I scare him and it shows
There's no fooling him

Blonde-haired boy
Track Name: You Can't Keep
Don't you promise me nothing
Don't you say another word
Don't you tell me that your sources could predict
What has just occurred
Don't you kiss my bleeding forehead
I can open my own doors
Don't you say the word "forever,"
Don't you tell me I am yours

Are we the ocean, that the moon pulls us?
Can we choose our dreamings when asleep?
Only He, our Father knows us
So don't make promises you can't keep

Who knows what tomorrow brings us
Who knows if the sun will rise
Who knows what pretty earthly angel
Will catch your winking eye

Don't take it wrong my darling,
Your intentions are kind
You can kiss my bleeding forehead
And open my doors if you don't mind

Are we the ocean, that the moon pulls us?
Can we choose our dreamings when asleep?
Only He, our Father knows us
So don't make promises you can't keep
Track Name: July
On a train through rolling land in my dreams
Trees melt by, and the light moves on through melting trees
I caught your eye for a moment, all trees and bees and knees
I caught your eye for a moment, and then you left me lonely

In a dream in paper-bound fantasy
Caught up in an adventure that don't belong to me
I heard your voice for a moment, in rainy Germany
I heard your voice for a moment, then you said goodbye to me

I'm wishing on starlight, I'm falling with the sand
I’ve memorized the paragraphs that leaked from your own hand
I'm waiting for the phone to ring, though I don't know why
I haven't heard your voice since the middle of July

In a truck, racing yellow lights on wet streets
Blinking through the gray light, rain falls in sheets
I let go for a moment, barely looked away
I only let go for a moment
What were you going to say?

I'm wishing on starlight, I'm falling with the sand
I’ve memorized the paragraphs that leaked from your own hand
I'm waiting for the phone to ring, though I don't know why
I haven't heard your voice since the middle of July

“Goodbye, Beautiful Girl,” He said
Track Name: Forbidden Love
You are a tall giraffe who lives on land, and I'm a fish who swims and we're really an unfortunate pair
You've got your goggles, you've got your snorkel, you'll brave the narwals and the orca(l)s but your neck's so long you're still up in the air

Your hooves are wet, you'll jump right out, but dear don't fret, don't fear, don't pout
I've got a plan for us, Darlin'
I'll grow some wings and up I'll fly,
Our faces will touch in the sky, cause I know Uncle Charlie Darwin

And just to make sure I'm not dead, I'll wear a fishbowl on my head
I've got gills, I'm still a fish
We're together, that's what I said, but the situation on my head is inconvenient for when we kish.
Track Name: New
I met the black birds way down south,
Follow the tracks to find me there
Winter kissed me on the mouth
And knotted its fingers in my hair

Scuffed-up boots and a string of pearls
Penny's worth of a hardened stare
Slack-jawed thirsty little girls
White-knuckled weary prayer

and I feel new

Used up all my favorite words
Wore all my favorite pencils down
Melodies used to fly like birds
Right out of this tired town

I feel new, I feel new
Track Name: Roots
I'll hide white flowers in my hair,
mask the stench of decay
the rotting of the person that I was yesterday

I'm clawing at the minutes
my fingernails, i pray, will slay this beast of longing for a home far away

Serpentine nostalgia, slithering through my ears
Scaly, scraping at my thoughts and poisoning all my fears
My fingertips are raw from holding on all these years
Wasted waking hours and wasted bitter tears

Oh these roots will wither away, I'm only passing through

I'm numbering all my freckles, permanent on my skin
Temporary flesh, oh tell me when will life begin?
I was planted by the Gardener and overgrown with sin,
He waters me, He tends to me, He prunes me and then

My roots will wither away, I'm only passing through
Track Name: Kitchen Shears
I cut my hair with the kitchen shears today
Watched in the mirror as my locks fell away
I held my breath, didn't have much to say
Turned on the faucet and washed it all away

I washed myself in the rain and in the dirt
I got a stain on my sister's favorite shirt
I missed fourteen of my facebook friend alerts
I fell down and laughed to hide the hurt

My skin cries for you
My skin sighs for you

I danced a dance with a dancing bear today
Bone and tooth were safely locked away
When it was time, I turned and walked away
Dancing bears don't have a bed but cement to lay in

My skin cries for you
My skin sighs for you
My skin aches for you
My skin crawls for you
Track Name: Bathwater
Pick up the angel who has fallen
She'll be glad to know you caught her
You still haunt my fever dreams, your face still floats in my bathwater
I feel your breath among the stars
I hear your voice through my fingers
I haven't spoken out so far
Silence is my mourning's daughter

Hallelujah

Here in the dust among your things
Your magazines and sweaters
You had a song to sing, a trick to make the medicine work better
There's a candle in the corner
There's a book upon the shelf
Did your eyes grow heavy in the night as you scanned the page letter by letter?

Hallelujah

You still haunt my fever dreams
Track Name: And I'll Go
if You want me to meet you in the morning
name the place and i'll leave tonight
pack my things and i'll get myself some coffee
road is dark but You are light
tell me where, tell me where, and i'll be there
i've got fuel for 100 miles or so
i'll fill my tank and i'll press on through the darkness
say the word, say "leave" and i'll go

and i'm not scared of dying on the way
because i've already died
i'm desperate to see Your face
You who raised me up to life
and I see You beyond each overpass
and in the river or tail-lights
If you want me to meet you in the morning, I'll head out tonight
